Semantics, Concepts, and Meta-cognition: Attributing Properties and Meanings to Complex Concepts

چکیده
Lieber (Morphology and lexical semantics. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2004; A lexical semantic approach to compounding. In: Lieber R, Štekauer P (eds) The Oxford handbook of compounding, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2009) suggests that semantic-encyclopedic knowledge plays an important role in determining the meaning of a compound. In this chapter, we discuss psycholinguistic research demonstrating that conceptual knowledge influences the interpretation of compound words and noun phrases both in terms of a relationbased gist interpretation (e.g., a green apple is an apple that is green) and in terms of specific content (e.g., green apples are sour). We present evidence indicating that judgments about the properties of modified nouns are affected not only by the content of the constituent concepts but also by meta-knowledge about how subcategories relate to categories.

A New Interpretation of the Semantics of "Moral Obligation" from Allame Tabatabaie's Viewpoint
The most important part in analyzing moral concepts includes those used as predicate in moral sentences covering moral concepts of valuation and obligation. Moral concepts in the field of values include those like “good” and “bad” while obligatory concepts include “ought to” and “ought no” and “duty”. Many papers have been written about “moral obligation”; however, dissociating the area of sema...
متن کاملPrototype theory and compositionality.
Osherson and Smith (1981, Cognition, 11, 237-262) discuss a number of problems which arise for a prototype-based account of the meanings of simple and complex concepts. Assuming that concept combination in such a theory is to be analyzed in terms of fuzzy logic, they show that some complex concepts inevitably get assigned the wrong meanings. In the present paper we argue that many of the proble...
متن کاملThe Semantics of the Goodness and the Ugly
There are different views concerning the meanings of the most important ethical concepts such as the goodness and the ugly. The author of this article while classifying various views and explaining them, tries to make a critical study of those views as well. Accordingly, first he goes on to examine critically the theory of emotionalists as one of the most important non-cognitive theories. Th...
متن کاملProbabilistic Semantics and Pragmatics: Uncertainty in Language and Thought
Language is used to communicate ideas. Ideas are mental tools for coping with a complex and uncertain world. Thus human conceptual structures should be key to language meaning, and probability—the mathematics of uncertainty— should be indispensable for describing both language and thought. Indeed, probabilistic models are enormously useful in modeling human cognition (Tenenbaum et al., 2011) an...
متن کاملContextual Processing of Abstract Concepts Reveals Neural Representations of Nonlinguistic Semantic Content
Concepts develop for many aspects of experience, including abstract internal states and abstract social activities that do not refer to concrete entities in the world. The current study assessed the hypothesis that, like concrete concepts, distributed neural patterns of relevant nonlinguistic semantic content represent the meanings of abstract concepts. In a novel neuroimaging paradigm, partici...
